Washington Area Fuel Fund provides assistance with heating payments for income-eligible households in danger of losing their primary source of heat. Applications are accepted from January 1 through May 31. To apply for help from the fund, go to The Salvation Army office in the county or city in which you live. Eligibility does not depend on whether you heat with natural gas, electricity, oil, coal, wood, kerosene or another heating fuel. To be eligible, you must be in an emergency situation and no be longer eligible for any government energy assistance programs. Gas or electric heating customers must already have received a termination notice or warning of future disconnection from the utility providing the primary heat source. WAFF pays for the primary heating source. Customers who heat with oil, coal, wood, kerosene or another fuel must demonstrate they do not have the funds to purchase fuel and cannot buy fuel on credit. Payments are made directly to utility providers.
